I decided that my EP will have 4 tracks, each track following the same role as the corresponding symphonic movement (e.g. 2nd movement is slow and light) and have a motif that is recontextualised in every song.
I have now started writing the initial plans for the fourth movement, the finale and am planning on working backwards after that to explore other ways to use the chorus motif. The movement features jazzy chords but suits a rock aesthetic with some form of intensity required. Hopefully this creates something interesting, although I will admit I am worried that it will be interesting but unpleasant.
I am currently only writing very vague outlines of songs, as I am still uncertain about instrumentation. I am leaning towards using purely acoustic instruments to achieve the raw sound I want the EP to have as opposed to a more esoteric sound that may come from using synthesisers. Using acoustic instruments also makes performing it live, one of my initial aims, far more feasible.
